As the composer of this hymn tune is unknown, folk song collectors regularly name the tune after the village it comes from, hence the name Slane. It was first published as With My Love on the Road by Patrick Joyce in 1909. The name most Christians know today, Be Thou My Vision, comes from Mary Elizabeth Byrne who translated an old Irish poem (Rop tú mo baile) in 1905. Today, the joined tune and text combination remain popular with many Christians around the world.
