This is a chorale prelude written in baroque style on the beloved tune Herzliebster Jesu (Ah, Holy Jesu).   It features flowing melisma-like patterns on the manuals with a haunting octave motif within the pedals signifying the struggles between heaven and hell beneath the flow of humanity on earth.  The chorale is meant to be played before this chorale prelude creating a stark contrast between the two arrangements.  

Ah, holy Jesus, how hast thou offended, 
that we to judge thee have in hate pretended? 
By foes derided, by thine own rejected, 
O most afflicted!
