Product Description

Optional string parts are also included and the piece may be played as string ensemble with percussion, concert band or as a combined full orchestra.

José Gaspar, literally the "last of the Buccaneers", plundered and terrorized the southwest coast of Florida in the late 18th and early 19th centirues. While the truth of the many stories about his life is debatable, he became known as the pirate "Gasparilla", from which the famous (or perhaps, infamous) Gasparilla Festival held annually in Tampa, Florida took its name. Much folklore exists about Gasparilla, including that he established a "pirate kingdom" in a mysterious location in Florida, became terrifically wealthy from plundering ships and holding hostages for ransom, and that he jumped from his ship and drowned rather than be captured by the U.S. Navy in 1821. The piece features many pirate and nautical themes easily playable by 2nd and 3rd year bands, along with a wealth of sound effects from percussion and optional synthesizer.
