Calon Lân is surely one of the best loved of Welsh songs. It was written as a hymn in the 1890s by Daniel James and John Hughes under the bardic name of Gwyrosydd, but has since attained the status of a folk song. It is frequently sung at matches of the Welsh rugby union by both fans and players, making the stadium resound!

David Evan Thomas's arrangement for solo piano places the tune in a sonorous key with simple arpeggiated figuration. The meaning of the text is clear: "I ask for a happy heart, an honest heart, a pure heart."
