Alan Bullards Sonatina for Oboe and Piano was written when the composer was in his early twenties, and it has received many performances from students and professionals.

Its three movements are in an unashamedly neo-classical style, with the two instruments seen as equal partners: in the first, flowing melodies are shared between the two instruments: in the second, a romantic oboe solo is presented over a simple repetitive accompaniment, later growing into a duet in which the piano takes the lead for a time: and the third movement is characterised by a witty sense of rhythmic interplay between the two instruments.
