This Chorale Prelude follows the tradition followed by organ composers across the centuries of basing compositions around chorale or hymn tunes which would be well known to audiences and in particular church congregations.

Wachet auf, ruft uns die Stimme (Wake O wake with tidings thrilling) is a Lutheran hymn written by Philipp Nicolai in 1598. Mendelssohn, Reger and in particular J.S.Bach are amongst the composers who have based compositions on this melody. It is particularly suitable for use in the season of Advent.
