I went to a recent recital by a former student of mine, Mary Hubbell, where she sang an entire program of French songs on poems by Paul Verlaine. The composers included Claude Debussy, Gabriel Fauré, Reynaldo Hahn, and others. It inspired me to do my own Paul Verlaine song cycle. I purchased his "Poémes saturniens" on Amazon and saw that there are four collections of his poems. I immediately was drawn to the first one: Melancholia. There are eight poems in the set. 1.
