The tune at the top line travels to different parts in subsequent verses and a descant introduced in the top line in verse 2 also travels round to other instruments as the work proceeds.
The words of the original hymn (written by Jeremiah E Rankin) are:
1. God be with you till we meet again; By his counsels guide, uphold you; With his sheep securely fold you. God be with you till we meet again. Till we meet, till we meet, Till we meet at Jesus feet, Till we meet, till we meet, God be with you till we meet again.
