Product Description

These two pieces for 3 clarinets were written for students studying clarinet with Walter Wurzburger in the early 1970s. The Bagatelles was originally titled Occasional Pieces and the names were changed to Bagatelles upon publication in 1983. They are modelled on the "Gebrauchmusik' written by the German composer Paul Hindemith in the 1920s an 1930s, much of it written for small wind ensembles which was designed to add to the then limited repertoire of music playable by amateur musicians and aimed at expanding the repetoire which could be played in the muscians' homes so the number of players was often no more than four, five, or six players. The first Bagatelle is very Hindemith-like in its style, often showing off densely-packed contrapuntal or canonic overlays or 'overlaps', which mimic the often dense contrapuntal imitations or 'games' so often employed by Johann Sebastian Bach. The second Bagatelle is a jazz study which often uses contrapuntal techniques to shape the harmony. Both Bagatelles are written primarily to be enjoyed by the players and not necessarily to be appreciated by an audience.
