History:
1. "In the Hall of the Mountain King" was composed as part of the incidental music for Henrik Ibsen's play "Peer Gynt", which premiered in 1876.
2. In the play, the music accompanies a scene where the protagonist, Peer Gynt, enters the hall of the mountain King, a troll king. The piece depicts Peer sneaking into the hall and then being chased by the king and his troll minions.
3. Often the piece in interpreted with a slowly intensifying cresendo and accellerando.
4. The main theme is simple and repetitive, making it instantly recognizable. The melody is built on a repeating motif that undergoes variations and development throughout the piece.
5. It is one of Greig's most popular works and has been used extensively in popular culture, including films, television shows, video games, and advertisements. This famous motif is often used as a trope for suspense and adventure.
