A brooding and sometimes brilliantly sparkling Lied style art song for piano and soprano vocal. The English lyrics, translated from the German Goethe poem of the same name, are from the perspective of a cadaver floating down a river at night after jumping off of a bridge to her death because of unrequited love. The lyrics are simultaneously directed toward the moon, the river, and her love interest. Each verse is followed by a piano ritornello that sets up the key and feel of the following verse. The highest pitch for the soprano is a D6, which is led to by step. This beautiful and challenging piece is appropriate for intermediate to advanced musicians.
