1939 standard, Duke Ellington's signature tune. Title is said to refer to Ellington's travel directions to composer Billy Strayhorn to get to the Sugar Hill district of Harlem where Ellington lived. Striking introductory riff fits nicely in transition and ending. Alternating melody between right hand, accompanied by walking bass, and left hand, accompanied in right hand by swing-style syncopated chords. Liberal use of rootless whole-tone progressions as fillers, giving modal effect. Technical difficulty minimized without compromising quality. Key change. No repeat sections.
