Weihnachtsboléro (Christmas-Boléro) came about after my good friend Michael Kraus thought it would be funny to combine Little Drummer Boy with Ravels Boléro. Without really thinking about it, I promised Michael to undertake the task.
Unfortunately, I soon came across a small but rather significant problem: Boléro is in 3/4 whereas Little Drummer Boy is in 4/4.
Thankfully, Little Drummer Boy works extremely well transformed into 6/8 and this produces a wonderful juxtaposition when combined with the virtually static 3/4 rhythm of Boléro.
Boléro is a masterwork of skillful orchestration and enthralling harmony, which results in an incredible crescendo - which lasts for a quarter of an hour! My aim was to achieve this same effect, however in a much shorter time frame!
Essentially, this arrangement is based on the structure of Boléro, using elements of Ravels harmonic and orchestrational ideas. The importance of the second, contrasting melody is not forgotten, with the famous trombone solo combined with fragments of Jingle Bells and ... voilà!

This arrangement is most effective with a snare drum, but it works well without.

Trumpet 2 in Bb and C
Horn in F / alt. Flugelhorn in Bb
Trombone in C (Bass Clef) and Bb (Treble Clef)
