Product Description

A beautiful Rondeña inspired by my studies with maestro Triguito in Madrid many years ago. Rondeña is a free flowing (sans mesure) Fandango from the Andalucían mountain (Sierra) town of Ronda. It is a meditative piece that I hope brings a moment of peace and reflection. The piece is played in what might be called open D tuning for the guitar. The base E is tuned down to D and the third G string is tuned down to F#. All the base notes and chords in general are left to ring out as long as possible, thus the many ties in the score. The piece is technically within reach of intermediate to advanced guitarists and is particularly interesting for classical guitarists wanting to incorporate a flamenco piece in their repertoire. The thumb plays a dominant role in the melodic sections, especially in the long legato passages, something that is distinctive for flamenco guitar as compared to classical guitar technique. The tremolo passages are also done in flamenco style with four finger strokes, index, ring, middle, index rather than the three stroke tremolo for classical guitar. I have notated the Rondeña in 3/4 time to give the piece a recognisable structure, although in reality the pacing and tempo can vary according to the mood and emotional atmosphere the individual interpreter wants to create. I give fingerings for the left hand whereas numbering of the strings for individual notes is kept to a minimum. It should be evident in most cases which string a note should be played on as the tuning restricts the number of alternatives. Fingering for the right hand is given in places where the flamenco style of playing differs from what would normally be performed with the right hand in classical guitar technique.
