Product Description
Early 20th century Canadian-American composer, conductor and pianist Robert Nathaniel Dett's "Two Spirituals: Music in the Mine" and "Let Us Cheer the Weary Traveler" combine his neo-romantic style and advocacy for spirituals in this engaging arrangement for brass quintet of two B-flat trumpets, horn, trombone and tuba. "Music in the Mine" provides a musical interpretation of the back-breaking and mind-numbing mining work in the steady accompaniment along with the dialogue of two miners yearning for better days, while "Let Us Cheer the Weary Travelers" is an upbeat dedication to our spiritual journey. As Director of the Hampton Institute, Dett developed the college's choir with his compositions and conducting into one of the leading choirs in the nation. He was the first African-American to receive a Bachelor's Degree in Music from Oberlin Conservatory in composition and piano in 1908 and awarded an Honorary Masters Degree in 1932 from the Eastman School of Music. The recording is of the entire edition.
The Music of Black Composers Series is a welcome and timely addition to the brass repertoire. Highly recommended! Wesley Nance, Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra, Eastman School of Music
I was so pleased to see the great works arranged for brass ensemble by Charles Decker Music Press especially the Music of Black Composers Series. It was rewarding to perform several of these with Summit Brass and students attending the Rafael Mendez Brass institute. You provide the brass world with some real gems.
