Running Up That Hill - Kate Bush
Arranged by Nat Brookes for String Quartet
Pop Pad
As this track, originally from Hounds of Love, has enjoyed new love owing to it's use on the Netflix hit, Stranger Things, I decided to arrange it. It requires some rehearsal to get tight, so (unlike my other work) this is less suitable for wedding quartets as the arrangement is quite complex and the individual parts are difficult. However it would be an excellent piece for a rehearsing string quartet to show off with at concerts or galas. Not only does the melody stretch and contract to deviate from standard four bar phrases, but the counter harmony parts require good timing and excellent ensemble skills.
Starting with a col legno rhythmic motif in viola and cello, mimicking the distinctive tom tom rhythm that persists through the entirety of the original song, gradually the harmonic and contrapuntal supporting parts become more busy. The second violin then takes up the rhythm with it's own col legno section, and afterwards all instruments bow interlocking passages of melody and counter melody to end in a thrilling climax.
Included: Score and set of parts.
Each part is four pages long. The first violin and viola part have well placed page turns, but I would recommend stand extensions, or a second stand for each player.
Rehearsal marks throughout.
Parts start at page 21
