Four songs for male voice and piano. In 2011, deeply moved by the poetry of American poet Bryan Borland, I reached out to ask if he would be willing to write poems that I could set to music. His website featured several compelling works, many exploring gay life and his personal experiences as a gay man. Fascinated by the possibility of creating a musical work on this subject, I was delighted when Bryan immediately agreed to collaborate. From the outset, I envisioned an intimate musical setting and felt that popular singing techniques would best serve my artistic vision for the work. This decision significantly influenced the musical style, which occupies a unique space between classical and popular idioms. While the treatment of musical materials and notation remains rooted in classical tradition, both the vocal writing and harmonic language draw closer to popular music aesthetics. The original version of Kindred Hearts was scored for voice, piano, and string quintet with double bass. However, recognizing the practical challenges of programming such instrumentation in typical art song recitals, I created this version for voice and piano to ensure broader accessibility and performance opportunities.
