Submitted for 2015 Areon Flutes International Chamber Music Composition Competition. Anam is for amplified flute and loop pedal and is a work built around the concept of being able to hear the souls of men. There are many religions and spiritual beliefs that feature a deity or omnipotent power, which can hear and communicate with the souls of mankind. Many depictions of this ability seem to make out the souls of man making a cacophonous sound, but I choose to believe that if one could hear the souls of every person to ever walk the earth, it would be a peaceful and balanced sound. Anam is meant to capture this belief by building layers of musical ideas that simultaneously clash and meld with each other. The work was written to be very open to interpretation with no tempo marking and several long, solo improvisation sections.
