A dark, dramatic standalone piece for a baritone vocalist with piano accompaniment. The lyrics tell the life story of Ragnar Lodbrog, a dying Viking hero. Most of the body of the six-minute piece reflects a somber funeral march in a Romantic style; however, alternating sections add glimmering Impressionistic piano flourishes in major keys, providing a sharp contrast. Music and lyrics inspired by the text of the historical 1763 book Five Pieces of Runic Poetry by Thomas Percy.
