Fifteen Virtuosic Etudes for Solo Trumpet, Op. 10: An Idiomatic Guide to Satisfactory Performance is my Master's Thesis for East Carolina University, which contains 15 challenging etudes for the trumpet.
After writing a short piece for the trumpet studios technical etude night in 2017, my professor, Mr. Gabriel DiMartino, asked me to compose a series of trumpet etudes. What started as an attempt to surprise the studio transpired into a project that would allow me to improve my craft as a composer as well as provide me an opportunity to improve writing for the trumpet. A series of fifteen etudes allowed me to experiment with various styles while expanding my own compositional abilities on the instrument. This thesis paper will include an overview of what each etude is teaching from a musical performance and compositional standpoint, as well as performance notes and the music for reference. Furthermore, an analysis for each etude and a discussion of my compositional process will be provided. My goal was to make these virtuosic etudes as idiomatic as possible for the player. It is my hope that providing performance notes as well as an analysis of these etudes will lead to a more informed and productive musical experience.
