The heading "Brightly and Briskly" is a general comment on the character's nature, but the tempo of the middle section of the piece should not be faster. The piece portrays the flaw in Jo's character; so the flare-ups in dynamics displays her hot-tempered dramatic nature and yet there is her sorrow and longing in the middle section. It is part of a set of 4. The other 3 being Meg, Beth, and Amy.
