Waltz For Wheels
"Wheels" was saxophonist and composer Bert "Wheels" Wilson, a prolific and unique avant-garde jazz voice. He wrote a series of tunes based on interpolations of Giant Steps changes, including "Rocky's Waltz" for his dog.
I decided to use the same format, except - why the 4/4 bars? Because Wheels never liked to color inside the lines for long!
Despite being based on John Coltrane's Giant Steps changes, this features a very easy, relaxed melody (the first half repeats, but because of the harmonic changes, most of the notes are spelled as their enharmonic equivalent.)
If you are looking for a way to explore Coltrane's harmonies without the high-power driving tempos usually associated, this composition is a great way to get inside the concepts and harmonies. Enjoy!
