A Prisoner Awakes is about an individual who is plagued by a conflict, whether real or imagined, that wreaks havoc on his psyche. The atmosphere, created by an opening ostinato in the bass, creates a sense of foreboding that builds in intensity. Eventually, the tune meanders into a dream sequence, and a melody arrives in the treble part that momentarily quells the rougher waters. However, this awakened memory only ignites a sense of urgency as the quick rhythmic flourishes lead us back to the beginning theme before gradually trailing away.
