Todd Tarantino: If You Love Me
(2020)
from "Gradualia"[solo
version]
Gradualia is a collection of works
for a variety of forces - solo voice with accompaniment, chorus to large
ensemble - setting the English proper antiphon texts of the Catholic Mass.
Using a simplified harmonic language and the traditional alternation of
Antiphon - Psalm verse form, the works from the series ennoble a liturgical
service and are accessible to professional and semi-professional ensembles and
soloists.
"If You Love Me" borrows from and adapts Thomas Tallis's 1565 setting of the same name, arranging it for solo voice,
recomposing it to match the text of the English Missal, and adding psalm verses alternatim.
Liturgically, If You Love Me is
the Communion Antiphon for the Sixth Sunday of Easter and is appropriate at
various other times during the liturgical year as well. Text from John 14
and Psalm 33.
This setting exists in two versions: 1) solo voice
and organ / keyboard; 2) solo voice, string quartet
