Snow's Cruel Crunching is a satire about the seasonal blues that many people in colder climates experience during winter. I had moved from Arizona to New York shortly after my graduation, and then experienced my first winter in such a climate. Upon returning to Arizona, I found it strange how much people hated the snow, and the season in general! That experience inspired this piece, in hopes that performing this in a winter concert may help some people to laugh at the strange phenomenon that is seasonal depression.
The piece itself is SATB and a capella. An ensemble with a strong soprano section is required for this piece, as they will need to be comfortable with singing up to A5 multiple times throughout the piece. The ability of the ensemble to strongly emote in both voice and in face is strongly recommended to convey the meaning of this piece. Exaggerating the emotions will help bring about the subtle comedy.
It's recommended to perform this during a Winter Concert, for reasons I'm sure don't need explaining.
