I originally intended this piece to be for solo voice and piano as a collection of art songs. I composed them at different times, though all except Counting the Goats were composed in Denver, Colorado between 2012 and 2014. I used poetry from World War I Welsh poets Hedd Wyn (pictured on cover) and Edward Thomas as a sort of exercise, a shout out to my Welsh heritage and as a support to all troops deployed who never returned. Intended as a pretty set of medium-easy level songs this cycle is not so much a setting of those poems as a musical reaction to them. Hedd Wyn and Edward Thomas were both killed in action in France, 1917. This cycle still stands to remind all the cost of war.
