"Free Spirit" Program Notes

"Free Spirit" is one of my first compositions in which I began introducing "ethnic" musical material. It is based on a story I mysteriously came up with: a daughter, being a free spirit in heart, desires to fly away from her family, and this desire of hers, creates a clash between her and her parents. The characters of the three members of the family father, mother, and daughter, alternate in the composition. While the mother appears to be more sentimental, the father expresses a strict and absolute attidute towards his daughter's decision. A decision that seems to be final since, at the end of the piece, she flies away through the "fading out" musical ending.
