This short piano piece is in ternary form, framed by an introduction and coda. The cantabile main theme in 2/2 is in C major and is accompanied by a descending bass line. It is repeated with the melody in canon, before a brief transition to the dominant minor. This contrasting theme, also stated twice (once in each hand), is in 6/8 and bears a strongly modal folk flavour, almost in the manner of a sea shanty. Following a further transition back to the tonic key, the opening main theme returns in majestic form. The work concludes with a coda that directly refers back to the introduction, thus bringing the piece full circle.The piece is highly accessible and is appropriate for most standards of pianist, including students and more advanced players.
