Strathspey is a ternary form piano piece. The outer sections are based on a repeated main theme, featuring the 'scotch snap' rhythm in the aeolian mode transposed to D. The middle section focuses on the dominant and texturally varies repetitions of a contrasting chord sequence. The work makes passing use of other 'scottishisms' such as drones and parallel triads, all within a modal context. The piece is highly accessible and is appropriate for most standards of pianist, including students, more advanced players and professionals.
