The piece develops various ideas deriving directly from the piano's introductory chord sequence, throughout the work's nine-minute duration. Meanwhile, the structure combines formal elements usually found in a sonata, such as a recurring rondo theme, variation procedures, and a distinct scherzo section. This extended piece explores the full three and a half octave range of the solo instrument and therefore is suited to more advanced bassoonists (& pianists), including students and professional players.
