Product Description
Light and Dark's (Grade 5) melody is derived from Messaien's Third Mode (also known as the Tcherepnin scale), a 9-tone symmetrical scale that contains 3 major seventh chords a major third apart. It's like a major diminished scale, or minor whole tone... the construction is whole-step, half-step transposed by major thirds.
Despite its unusual construction, it has a familiar sound; its intervalic structure became widely used throughout the 20th Century, notably in the work of Herbie Hancock and others on the vanguard of progressive harmony.
The attached mp3 is from a live performance by the Jon Burr Big Band, with Vic Juris featured on the astounding guitar solo, and Jerry Dodgion on Soprano Sax. The YouTube video is of that same performance.
The score is Tabloid Portrait (11x17) in layout.
