A lifelong friend with an Oxford Choral Scholar background asked if I I would compose a setting of the Magnificat and Nunc Dimittis for his amateur choir. As a non churchgoer I demurred for several years but after further requests agreed to have a go! This setting is written for unaccompanied mixed choir to be sung as a performance rather as part of a normal service. Having spent two years studying strict counterpoint and harmony with the church composer Anthony Milner I very much enjoyed writing for four voice parts and was not displeased with the result. It was performed in Bristol by Trevor's choir, since disbanded, but promoted until now. I would very much like to hear from anyone thinking of performing. Individual parts are available on request.
