This work was partially inspired by the book, The Thirteenth Tribe, by Arthur Koestler, about a historical civilization called Khazaria. Located between the Black and Caspian Seas between the 6th and 10th centuries, the Khazars had a rather formidable military presence and alliance with Byzantium. The piece's jolting accents and dynamic rhythmic lines ebb and flow between the different voices and reinforce the sense of an erratic and unstable landscape of war.
