Saxophone Duet
Tempo: Up-tempo swing (quarter=152 -172)
Running time: approximately 2:30
This swinging blues based tune was composed in recognition of Pips
On La Brea, the Los Angeles restaurant and jazz club that has been the
Saturday night home for my jazz trio for the past five years. It can be
played by any two similar saxophones (2 altos, two tenors, etc.), or
even by two trumpets, two clarinets, or almost any two treble clef
instruments.
The tempo can range from moderate up-tempo to as fast as you feel
comfortable taking it. The range goes from a D below the staff to a high
E above the staff.
The form is a repeated blues "head" in G major with a six bar extension.
The key changes to E minor with a 12 bar solo for each player. Chord
symbols are provided to allow for improvisation if desired. The solos
are followed by a recapitulation of the original melody.
Independent syncopated rhythms and contrapuntal lines are what
make this duet moderately challenging. It is good for working on a
students rhythmic jazz feel.
