Alto Sax Feature
Running time: 3:54
This song was composed by Gershwin and Duke in 1936 for the Ziegfeld Follies, where it was introduced by Bob Hope. It has since become part of the Great American Song Book. Its been recorded numerous times by such artists as Billie Holiday, Ella Fitzgerald, Stan Getz, Cannonball Adderley, and Frank Sinatra. It was a big hit for Trumpeter Bunny Berrigan who recorded it in 36 and subsequently used it as his theme song.
This arrangement makes the first alto sax the featured soloist. He plays the melody and also gets to improvise for a half chorus. If you have an altoist in your band who has a way with a ballad, this arrangement makes a great showcase.
Instrumentation is the standard big band: five saxes (a,a,t,t,b), four trumpets, four trombones, guitar, piano, bass & drums, plus some optional parts.
Optional parts are: 5th trumpet, two French horns, and vibraphone. But the arrangement works perfectly well if they are not available.
Both a full score and a three page condensed conductor part are included.
Brass parts are in a moderate range. The lead trumpet stays mostly in the staff, although there is one high E at a climactic moment.
