Blueshift is the continuation of a number of ideas and experiences, the first of which is the need to compose exciting and challenging music for the classroom. This piece attempts to put the Key Stage 2 or 3 budding musician into the musical world of film scores and minimalism albeit minimalism with a small m. Combining moto perpetuo with contextually more adventurous accompanying harmony my aim is to move the musical learning away from the sometimes twee and undemanding into something with a little more musical bite. As such Blueshift should be playable by students from Year 4 or 5 upwards, either in its entirety as written live or to a backing track. The title comes from the idea that as light (in this case the light of the Andromeda Galaxy) approaches a fixed point it shifts towards the blue end of the spectrum. For the purposes of both story telling and a cross-curricular link to science Blueshift charts the journey of the Andromeda Galaxy (represented by the ever present 5-8 ostinato) towards our own Milky Way Galaxy and what happens on route.
