The Toccare began in the early 16th century as a virtuosic instrumental work for strings (associated with lutes especially) or keyboard instruments. It is the predecessor to the toccata, requiring quick finger motion, contrapuntal writing, and often possessing an improvisatory quality. Toccare is 8 minutes and 30 seconds in duration.

Jeffrey Hoover's work- music ranging from soloist to symphony orchestra -has received recognition through the prestigious Trieste prize, awards from Mu Phi Epsilon, the Lancaster Fine Arts Festival, the L. Russolo competition, grants, publications, fellowships, and more than 20 commissions. He is a member of the ACME roster of Mu Phi Epsilon, recognized for distinguished achievement as a composer.
