A sparkly example of what can be achieved when piano and recorder play music intentionally written for this combination. Inspired (in part) by Louis Andriessen's use of instrumentation in 'Melodie', 'Whimsy' is all about rhythmic counterpoint, simple, complimentary, Gamelan-inspired modes and the melding of two, very different, timbres. Post-minimalist in nature, it is challenging but not virtuosic, edgy, but not overly-dissonant. Although written for descant (soprano) recorder and piano, this piece can also be played with treble (alto) and tenor recorder.
