Piano solo based on the hymn tune KEDRON, originally published in Sacred Harp and other hymnals. According to Hymnary.org, the Sacred Harp text was as follows: Thou Man of grief, remember me, Who never canst Thyself forget. Thy last expiring agony, Thy fainting pangs and bloody sweat. The Variations evoke this rugged image and take the listener through the last hours of the life of Jesus. Other familiar hymn tunes are woven into the Variations. Our church pianist plays this work on Ash Wednesday during the imposition of ashes.
