Product Description

Four serious but engagingly fanciful studies in early romantic style which may be played independently or together as a cycle.
The Vier Romantische Klaviertücke (Four Romantic Piano Pieces) were composed at separate times between 1979 and 1991. They may be performed separately or as a "suite." At one time Ford considered the possibility of grouping them together as a single sonatina, but chose instead to apply that title only to the first piece.

Sonatine [2/2, e, M+]
The Sonatine is, indeed, in sonata form, but by focussing on a variant of the exposition's principal theme in the development section and proceeding directly to the exposition's subordinate theme (recast in E minor) in the recapitulation, the entire structure is compressed. Such concentration of emotionally charged materials within a relatively small structure intensifies the mood of Sturm und Drang which pervades this compositional study in early romantic style.

"Geisterreigen" ("Round Dance of the Spirits") [3/4, e, M+]
This movement, known simply as "Andantino" in its symphonic form, began life as "Geisterreigen" ("Dance of the Spirits")--one of the Four Romantic Piano Pieces. It carries forth the pathos of the Sonatine in E Minor of the same series, but here there is less turbulence and more somber dignity. Structurally, the piece might be described as a scherzo with double trio.

"Sehnsucht" ("Longing") [2/4, a, M]
The title of "Sehnsucht" ("Longing") might have been suggested by Joseph von Eichendorff's poem of the same name, but Ford's interpretation of the subject is decidedly different from that of the German poet. Here, a wider range of moods is evoked--wistful longing, bitter frustration, gentle yearning and ultimate fulfillment.

"Feenjagd" ("The Fairy Hunt") [3/4, e, M+]
"Feenjagd" ("The Fairy Hunt") is a mercurial rondo animated by the spirit of Mendelssohn. It calls for wide dynamic contrasts and exceptionally fluent delivery for its gossamer visions to achieve their full effect.
