SOULS AT REST for ORGAN
Playing time: Appx. 2:40
Services: All Saints, All Souls, Autumn, Memorial, any
The pedal plays the somber yet peaceful melody in this
rather introspective work, with the swell box opening now and then to allow the
keyboard to give little dialogues that echo the melody.
A dissonant mood in the middle section is reminiscent of our
dismay and confusion over the loss of loved ones, but the return of the melody
at the end soothes us once more with eternal hope.
All
Saints and All Souls are beautiful celebrations that are harbingers of the
close of the year. As the beginnings of the pre-winter feasts, they are also
the earliest to shine light in the darkness as many cemeteries become
illuminated by the warm glow of thousands of candles placed in commemoration of
the dearly departed. Although I composed this piece under the spiritual influence
of those two holy days, the work may be used at any service where a reflective,
meditative piece is needed. The registrations I give here are merely
suggestions; adapt at will to your instrument and the ambience you wish to
create. God bless!
