Although the title of this piece is well-known, the music is not: This is not an arrangement of any existing version of "Pie Jesu". It is an original composition, one which I wrote for All Saints and All Souls, although it is perfect for any memorial services as well. And with its quiet, somber mood with an underlying feel of hope, it can also be a perfect piece for an autumn concert venue, and also works well with violin in place of flute.

The key to performance is balance; the organ registration must support but not overwhelm the flautist. If the registration seems a touch too quiet, perhaps it is just right since both instruments have measures and passages where they play solo or nearly so. It is a composition of spiritual meaning and performing it with a depth of spiritual longing and hope, will best bring out its intent. God bless.
