STABAT MATER for ORGAN
Playing time: Appx. 2:30
Services: Lent, Good Friday, Holy Saturday, Marian
This short yet dark and dramatic work is a piece I arranged for pipe organ, from my choral composition of the same name.
In many liturgical traditions the organ is not typically heard in the church throughout Lent. "Stabat Mater" justifies its place as an organ work in the Lenten season by the power of its mood and imagery. Even its closing six notes in the soprano line echo the final words of my original choral work: "My Lord, My God, My Son" Thus as a whole the work is meant to give us a real understanding of Marys position as Christs Mother that day at Calvary.
In so describing the mood and the pathos of this piece I do not mean it to be theatrical; it is emotional. But with its contrasting dynamics and setting, "Stabat Mater" can be a perfect harbinger hinting at the organs joyous sounds filling the church once more during the Easter season.
God bless.
