The Aristocrats

The Aristocrats (a duo of plucking and blowing)

It was a challenging task and an interesting one to use the guitar as a powerful accompanied force when I wrote The Aristocrats. The reason was because mostly of the clarinet part came after I conceived the whole work. My esteemed colleague Peter Cokkinias from Berklee College of Music implanted the idea in the Fall of 2005 to write a clarinet and guitar duo for a performance in Spring 2006. Finally, after some thoughtful nights and some form experimentation The Aristocrats was complete.

The work starts with a meditative introduction before the main part unfolds a dance idea between the two instruments almost humoresque which hands over a pensive thought in the clarinet that repeats itself almost as an unanswered question. Could anyone please answer? My composition language is sometimes folkloristic around my Greek heritage, sometimes around tonal centers, and sometimes simple within a few "key" notes, evolves around programmatic ideas which I get from every day living or dying

Concerning the title of the piece. It is a family-oriented story. It is like a theatrical play, where in the first scene the whole family is gathered peacefully in front of the fireplace. Everyone looks so happyThen
