"What Wondrous Love Is This" is an old Shaker hymn originating 1811. This arrangement for solo viola and piano attempts to fully capture the haunting, deep, and rich quality of the original tune in the Dorian mode, while offering the violist an unaccompanied opportunity to display soloistic rubato. The piano enters upon the completion of the first statement of the melody by the viola and uses ostinato patterns in the right hand and hand crossing chords in the left hand. The third statement of the theme is quick and very staccato. The final statement of the melody features some double stopping in the viola part while the piano plays in the original chorale style before returning to the piano's initial ostinato-hand crossing texture.
