The tune was composed by Louis Bourgeois for the Genevan Psalter, as a setting for Psalm 42. The text of this arrangement, based on Isaiah 40:105, was written by Johann Gottfried Olearius in 1671, and translated into English by Catherine Winkworth in 1863.
