Back to School 2015, Duration 8.5 minutes, composed in 2003. Text is excerpted from the book The Decoration of Houses by Edith Wharton and Ogden Codman, Jr.. Seven short movements: I. Introduction: Rooms in General, II. Openings: Doors, Windows, Vestibule, III. Solo: The Dining Room, IV. Structure: Walls Ceilings, Floors, V. Solo: Fireplaces, VI. Interiors: The Childrens Room, VII. Conclusion: Common Sense. Solo passages may be sung as unisons. Narration may be divided among several people. The occasional "x" noteheads indicate that text is spoken in rhythm. The audio clip is the final movement--Conclusion, performed in May, 2003 by the Holyoke Community College Chorale, directed by Dr. Janet Polvino and accompanied by Joyce Crouch. Complete recording available upon request from the composer at ebrill@hcc.edu. The nature of the piece is elegant, a bit satiric, a bit wacky--certainly one of a kind.
