Variation on Green
Sleeves for percussion ensemble arr. by Dan Heslink
This most ancient and loved
British folksong can be found in hundreds of arrangements, but imagine its setting
for percussion ensemble, or as a Caribbean salsa, or as an American jazz
selection. All of these styles are explored with this extremely popular tune.
This if one of two
arrangements of Green Sleeves by Dan Heslink, both of which are available through
Sheet Music Plus. The other arrangement, for marimba trio, follows similar
musical contours and is available separately.
The required instruments
are distributed between five performers: marimba, vibraphone, bass marimba, crotales (or
orchestra bells), triangle,
suspended cymbal, conga and tumbadora, guiro, temple blocks, field drum, tamtam and drum set. Its demands
are at the intermediate level, and it requires a strong drum set player. The
key to drum set notation occurs in the part.
This work will serve any concert or recital
very well. It also brings the melodys seasonal associations, for it is the tune
to which the words "What Child Is This" is set. Audiences and performers will enjoy its modal cast and high variety
of expressive content, ranging from evocative pastoral folksong, to rhythmic Latin
dance and to the swinging climax.
