Arlequin (Harlequin) is a typical character of the commedia dell'arte, whose costume is made of multicolored rhombuses. These would represent the many facets of Harlequin, as well as his poverty.

Scaramouche is a typical character of the commedia dell'arte, whose name (skirmish) means "little fighter". He is boastful, braggart, and timid, and he always ends up running away or being beaten. All dressed in black, in the Spanish fashion, and carrying a long rapier he announces himself as being at least prince or duke, but he fills the roles more modest if necessary.
