Product Description

The two pentatonic gospel hymns, Come, Ye Sinners Poor and Needy and Amazing Grace have long been favorites of mine for textual reasons as well as for their musical simplicity and beauty. As early as the mid to late 70s my wife, Brenda, and I sang the two together as a quodlibet in an a-cappella duet.  This idea became the a-cappella center section of this arrangement. While serving Columbia Baptist Church in Falls Church, Virginia (1976-1987), my love of Dave Brubecks Take Five led me to play with the idea of setting Come Ye Sinners (a hymn I had used with revival choirs on several occasions in local churches) in 5/4 meter. After writing out the very repetitious accompaniment by hand, this arrangement took shape. It was first used at Columbia. Since then, it has been received very favorably from others who have performed it. It has proved useful on choir tours with both youth and adults, including tours of central China as well as the North Eastern United States. A performance by the Concert Choir at North Greenville University, in South Carolina, (Barry Combs, director) can be heard on the Pepper web site.
